Individual Income Tax Preparation - Level II

This course is designed for individuals interested preparing complex tax returns. Our primary focus will be on tax law and the tax forms as they relate to preparing comprehensive tax returns with multiple schedules including Schedule A (Itemized Deductions), Schedule B (Interest Income), Schedule C (Business Income/Losses), Schedule D (Capital Gains and Losses), and Schedule E (Rental Income). Emphasis will also be placed on the complex language of the Internal Revenue Code and its importance in tax preparation and tax research. We will examine various careers in tax (including becoming an enrolled agent), the IRS and NY State requirements for paid tax professionals, and tax preparation software available for personal and professional use. Like Tax Preparation Level I, this course is three fold - students learn the theoretical aspects of tax preparation by way of the tax laws, the practical aspects by way of the simulated software, and most of all, students’ gain hands-on experience by participating in the York College VITA Program. Students completing this course will have the skills necessary to complete the IRS Advance Certification exam for the volunteer tax preparers. Individuals that successfully complete the IRS Certification Examination will be eligible to intern in the York College Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to gain exposure to real tax clients and learn valuable skills including communication and teamwork. In addition, with instructor recommendation, you may be able to enroll in the EA Exam Review course.

The Continuing Education tax program is supervised by Robert Clovey, CPA. He is an Associate Professor of Accounting & Taxation at York College. He is also the past president of the Queens/Brooklyn chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and is currently the Co-chair of the tax committee of the Queens/Brooklyn chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
